For most Bermudians, Good Friday means tradition:

• fellowshipping at their family church,
• flying Bermuda-made kites, and
• eating fishcakes with hot cross buns!

DID YOU KNOW: Kite flying dates back to ancient Africa and Indonesia?!  It dates back over 3000 years ago!   Whoa!

And, look – we continue with kite flying, here in Bermuda!  Amazing!

This tradition reached Bermuda when the British army troops used them to plan telegraph poles. Bermuda traditional kites have long cloth tails and they are made of paper tissues of different colours.  Some of our homemade kites are so huge that it takes several men to get aloft!

THE FOOD

Another long-held tradition that the Bermudians celebrate is fish cakes with hot cross buns. A direct import from the UK, hot cross buns are much favoured with salted codfish. When given special treatment, this dish comes out absolutely delicious!  We can attest to this!  Try it out with these recipes from Lindo’s Supermarket (for hot cross buns) and Bermunchies (for fish cakes) – both, Bermuda-style 😉

THE FUN

Main events are held throughout the island including at Horseshoe Bay Beach, in St. David’s, and at parks throughout the island.

Horseshoe Bay Beach is the most photographed beach in Bermuda. Here, you don’t have to worry about your kite soaring into power lines, though you may have to fish them out of the sea! 🙂  Over the years, this beach hosts fun games for children and adults as well as live entertainment.

As you drive about the island, you will find practically every park packed with families choosing to come together and have more personal celebrations with kite flying, marble playing, dominoes, etc..

Be sure to head to St. David’s early in the morning.  It is so much fun to watch residents float down the closed off streets in their homemake go-carts. Gather on the St. David’s cricket field for afternoon activities.

If you are traveling with little ones, be sure to hit up all of these events and allow them to experience face-painting, craft-making, and more, the Bermudian way!

These colourful and spring-inspired events will surely rejuvenate you and make you fall in love with Bermuda!

PERSONAL TIPS

• Carry cash for such activities as face painting, cotton candy, fun castles, munchies, and more

• Purchase at least two (2) kites; damage is inevitable during a mass-flying weekend 🙂  We’ve had our share of friendly ‘kite wars’ over the years

• consider catching the bus or riding to the various events; parking may be a task with an electric car

• check out the PINK N BLUE app for the holiday bus schedule; know when to leave home and know what time the last bus heads back to the unit

You can experience the best of Bermuda during the island’s annual affairs:

• welcoming festivals,
• lively sporting matches,
• fun street fairs, and
• eye-opening art walks.
